So I’ve just come back from a great festival at Glasto. After getting there on Wed 22nd (at some ungodly hour in the morning) and leaving at another ungodly hour early on Mon 27th, it required a substantial amount of food to get us through.

This time, I wasn’t overly prepared to pay the £7+ for greasy burgers in a bap, so in my quest to save money wherever possible, I took my own food. This could only mean one thing, cereal bars and dinners in a tin. So here’s my quick review:

Tinned meatballs (around 45p) – Avoid if at all possible!
As glamorous as the picture made them took, I should have known better, especially at that price. You just know then you’re eating substandard meat, and in this case, they tasted pretty vile!

Tinned Chicken Tikka Masalla (around 80p) – Where’s the chicken!?
I’ve never seen anything quiet like it, not only were the chicken pieces hard to come by, I’ve never seen anything so brightly coloured orange in my life! It looked like it had been exposed to some kind of nuclear radiation – vary unnatural!

Tinned Beef Stew (around 80p) – Best out of a bad bunch!
Out or everything Id cooked up on my camping stove, this was definitely the best tasting. Although you’ve still got to question the nutritional values, it definitely gave me a warm feeling inside, which I think is a good quality in a stew, albeit from a tin!

So after a long sleep on my return, I couldn’t wait to fry up some onions and garlic and cook up something from scratch, boy can you taste the difference!

Are you finding your food budget is getting way out of hand? Well then read on as this is the best money and time saving tip, and best of all, you will be healthier at the end of it too. What more could you possibly ask for!? Better health and more money!

Plan your weekly dinners and include the ingredients on your shopping list (that’s right 7 days of dinners to cook from scratch). You may be surprised what you already have in your cupboards. The best part is, should you continue to plan your meals in this way, after the first month (or so), you will be surprised how many ingredients you already have in your cupboards to cook a full-blown meal, then requiring only 3-4 ingredients per dinner thereafter. It’s tried and tested AND IT WORKS! It’s even recommended by Money Saving Expert.

Also, if your only cooking for 1 or 2, put the rest in the freezer (as per last post).

Making regular trips to the local shop for ad-hoc purchases really mounts up cost wise – so plan ahead.

If you want to be really organised visit this site where you can download software to manage your food ‘inventory’ for you, although, this is quiet extreme.
