Minced Meat

If you like cooking from scratch and in bulk, minced meat is great. What’s more, since lean and extra lean alternatives have become more popular in the shops, it’s actually a pretty healthy food as well.

However, much like stewing beef, minced meat isn’t something you can quickly whip something up with (unless reheating). You need to let flavours infuse into it to make it taste really great - so you’ll usually end up stewing it in the first instance. That’s why minced meat leftovers tend to taste so good when you get them out the freezer (because the flavours have had more time to mingle together).

Minced MeatAlthough you can get extra lean minced meat, there’s still an even lower fat alternative available – minced turkey. I was wondering down the meat isle of my local supermarket in search of the 'Good for you' version of beef minced meat, there was none left and the closest alternative was £3 for 500g. I gazed over at the poultry section where my eyes stumbled across turkey minced meat – 500g charged at £1.60.

I was amazed. Not only was it half the price, turkey is a whole lot better for you as well. After a few quick Google searches, I found these comparisons per 100g:

  Beef Turkey
Fat 20.3g 5.4g
Protein 24g 22g

Check out my Turkey Burger and Turkey Chilli Con Carne Recipe - they taste great. Turkey minced meat keeps in its moister, has equally as much protein as minced beef and has 75% less fat - give it a try!
