How to separate Fat from Ground Beef

If you’re cooking with ground beef which is high in fat, you can easily extract much of the fat from the beef using my simple technique.

  1. Firstly, place the ground beef into a good quality, large, shallow, non-stick pan.
  2. Now put it on the lowest heat on the stove – leaving the meat to “sweat” in order for the juices to run out of the beef. It’s for this reason the temperature must remain low, otherwise the meat will seal and the fat will stay in.
  3. Leave for approximately 10 minutes whilst stirring the beef.
  4. After this time, the meat should have browned and you should be left with a pool of fat in the pan.
  5. Carefully lean the pan slightly to one side in order to separate the fat from the beef, then use a spoon to spoon the fat into a separate bowl.
  6. Now cook the meat as normal in your favourite recipes.

Take a look at the video below for a demonstration, where I managed to extract 70g of fat from a 500g pack of ground beef!
