How to roast a Chicken

It's must be up there as the go-to meat for a Sunday roast! Learn how to roast a chicken with my simple directions, or by watching my 2 minute video below - showing you the really simple steps to cook the perfect roast chicken.

  1. Remove the Chicken from its packaging and place it in a roasting tin. You can use one you don't mind getting too messy.
  2. Now baste the Chicken by drizzling some Olive Oil over the top. Then get a brush to evenly spread the Oil all over the Chicken.
  3. Finish getting the Chicken ready for the oven by covering it (and the tin) with aluminium foil. Then put it in an oven that has preheated to 190c.
  4. You then need to cook the Chicken for 20 minutes per 500g + 20 minutes on top of that. So for a Chicken that weighs 2kg, it'll take 1h 40min to cook.
  5. When the Chicken is 30 minutes away from being done, remove the foil and baste the Chicken with the juices in the roasting tin. Then return to the oven (without the foil) for the remaining 30 minutes - allowing it to brown up nicely.
  6. When the cooking time is up, remove the Chicken from the oven and check it's cooked through using a thermometer, or by checking the juices run clear by cutting into the Chicken.
  7. Finally, wrap the Chicken back up in the foil and leave to rest for 30 minutes - helping the meat to stay succulent and tender. Then carve and serve.
